Pollen grains display a wide range of variation in aperture number and arrangement (pattern) in angiosperms. Apertures are well-defined areas of the pollen wall surface that permit pollen tube germination. For low aperture numbers, aperture patterns are characteristic of the major taxonomic divisions of angiosperms. This paper presents a developmental model that explains most of the aperture patterns that are recorded in angiosperms. It is based on the analysis of the different events that occur during meiosis and lead to microspore differentiation. It demonstrates that variation occurring during meiosis in angiosperms is sufficient to produce the core morphological set of the most commonly observed pollen morphologies.  相似文献

In most flowering plants, a single cytokinesis follows the two meiotic divisions during pollen-grain ontogeny. Aperture pattern (i.e., aperture number and distribution on pollen surface) ontogeny could be linked to the processes ensuring the apportionment of the cytoplasm to the four microspores.This apportionment is achieved by radial arrays of microtubules organized around the nuclei. The cleavage planes are defined in the overlapping regions of opposing arrays extending from different nuclei. We followed the establishment of these arrays in two different lines of plants belonging to the genus Nicotiana that produce pollen grains with different aperture numbers. Different distributions of the microtubules have been observed, which can be interpreted as resulting from variation in the interactions between nuclei; these distributions appear to be correlated with aperture number.As a consequence, we propose that simultaneous cytokinesis allows the formation of multiple pollen morphologies. This mechanism is consistent with aperture number distribution within angiosperms and provides clues to help our understanding of the evolution of aperture number.  相似文献

The acute renal effects of hypoxemia and the ability of the co-administration of an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (perindoprilat) and an adenosine receptor antagonist (theophylline) to prevent these effects were assessed in anesthetized and mechanically-ventilated rabbits. Renal blood flow (RBF) and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) were determined by the clearances of para-aminohippuric acid and inulin, respectively. Each animal acted as its own control. In 8 untreated rabbits, hypoxemia induced a significant drop in mean blood pressure (-12 +/- 2%), GFR (-16 +/- 3%) and RBF (-12 +/- 3%) with a concomitant increase in renal vascular resistance (RVR) (+ 18 +/- 5%), without changes in filtration fraction (FF) (-4 +/- 2%). These results suggest the occurrence of both pre- and postglomerular vasoconstriction during the hypoxemic stress. In 7 rabbits pretreated with intravenous perindoprilat (20 microg/kg), the hypoxemia-induced changes in RBF and RVR were prevented. FF decreased significantly (-18 +/- 2%), while the drop in GFR was partially blunted. These results could be explained by the inhibition of the angiotensin-mediated efferent vasoconstriction by perindoprilat. In 7 additional rabbits, co-administration of perindoprilat and theophylline (1 mg/kg) completely prevented the hypoxemia-induced changes in RBF (+ 11 +/- 3%) and GFR (+ 2 +/- 3%), while RVR decreased significantly (-14 +/- 3%). Since adenosine and angiotensin II were both shown to participate, at least in part, in the renal changes induced by hypoxemia, the beneficial effects of perindoprilat and theophylline in this model could be mediated by complementary actions of angiotensin II and adenosine on the renal vasculature.  相似文献

Matrix-degrading metalloproteinases may play a role in the pathophysiology of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BDP). We, therefore, evaluated correlations between gelatinase activities [metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and MMP-9] or tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 levels present in the airways during the initial phase of hyaline membrane disease and the onset of BPD. Tracheal aspirates were obtained within 6 h of birth (day 0) from 64 intubated neonates with a gestational age < or =30 wk. Forty-five neonates were resampled on day 3 or 5. Total MMP-2 level measured by zymography fell with time, whereas total MMP-9 level and TIMP-1 levels, assayed by ELISA, increased; the MMP-9 increase correlated with the increase in airway inflammatory cell numbers. Among the parameters measured on day 0, 3, or 5, lower total MMP-2 level, lower birth weight, and higher fraction of inspired oxygen on day 0 were significantly and independently associated with the development of BPD. In conclusion, MMP-9 level and TIMP-1 levels increased after birth but are not linked to BPD outcome. In contrast, low MMP-2 level at birth is strongly associated with the development of BPD.  相似文献

In most eukaryotes, genes encoding ribosomal RNAs (rDNA) are clustered in long tandem head-to-tail repeats. Studies of Saccharomyces cerevisiae have indicated that rDNA copy number is maintained through recombination events associated with site-specific blockage of replication forks (RFs). Here, we describe two Schizosaccharomyces pombe proteins, homologs of S. cerevisiae Slx1 and Slx4, as subunits of a novel type of endonuclease that maintains rDNA copy number. The Slx1-Slx4-dependent endonuclease introduces single-strand cuts in duplex DNA on the 3' side of junctions with single-strand DNA. Deletion of Slx1 or Rqh1 RecQ-like DNA helicase provokes rDNA contraction, whereas simultaneous elimination of Slx1-Slx4 endonuclease and Rqh1 is lethal. Slx1 associates with chromatin at two foci characteristic of the two rDNA repeat loci in S. pombe. We propose a model in which the Slx1-Slx4 complex is involved in the control of the expansion and contraction of the rDNA loci by initiating recombination events at stalled RFs.  相似文献

The Capromyidae (hutias) are endemic rodents of the Caribbean and represent a model of dispersal for non-flying mammals in the Greater Antilles. This family has experienced severe extinctions during the Holocene and its phylogenetic affinities with respect to other caviomorph relatives are still debated as morphological and molecular data disagree. We used target enrichment and next-generation sequencing of mitochondrial and nuclear genes to infer the phylogenetic relationships of hutias, estimate their divergence ages, and understand their mode of dispersal in the Greater Antilles. We found that Capromyidae are nested within Echimyidae (spiny rats) and should be considered a subfamily thereof. We estimated that the split between hutias and Atlantic Forest spiny rats occurred 16.5 (14.8–18.2) million years ago (Ma), which is more recent than the GAARlandia land bridge hypothesis (34–35 Ma). This would suggest that during the Early Miocene, an echimyid-like ancestor colonized the Greater Antilles from an eastern South American source population via rafting. The basal divergence of the Hispaniolan Plagiodontia provides further support for a vicariant separation between Hispaniolan and western islands (Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica) hutias. Recent divergences among these western hutias suggest Plio-Pleistocene dispersal waves associated with glacial cycles.  相似文献

The expression of the colonic mitochondrial 3-hydroxy 3-methyl glutaryl CoA (mHMGCoA) synthase, a key control site of ketogenesis from butyrate, is lower in germ-free (GF) than in conventional (CV) rats. In contrast, the activity of glutaminase is higher. The objective of this study was to investigate whether the intestinal flora can affect gene expression through short chain fatty acid (SCFA) and butyrate production. GF rats were inoculated with a conventional flora (Ino-CV) or with a bacterial strain producing butyrate (Clostridium paraputrificum, Ino-Cp) or not (Bifidobacterium breve, Ino-Bb). In the Ino-CV rats, mHMGCoA synthase expression was restored to the CV values 2 days after the inoculation, i.e. concomitantly with SCFA production. In the Ino-Cp group, but not in the Ino-Bb group, mHMGCoA synthase and glutaminase were expressed at the level observed in the CV rats. These data suggest that the intestinal flora, through butyrate production, could control the expression of colonic mHMGCoA synthase and glutaminase. These modifications in gene expression by butyrate in vivo seem unrelated to a modification of histone acetylation.  相似文献

The Holcus complex in France consists of two species, Holcus lanatus L. (Yorkshire fog; 2n= 2x= 14) and Holcus mollis L. (Creeping soft-grass; 2n= 4x= 28) and an interspecific hybrid H.m.×H.l. (2n= 5x= 35), which is morphologically similar to Holcus mollis. A heterologous rDNA probe from wheat was used to detect the corresponding region in Holcus (s. l.) genomic DNA'fragments, for six to eight plants from 13 populations located south-west of Paris. A restriction enzyme map of the ribosomal RNA genes (rDNA) in Holcus (s. l.) was also constructed. The length polymorphism detected in the IGS region was used as a DNA fingerprint for the identification of different cytotypes and species of the Holcus complex and for the typing and delimitation of individuals in populations. In the light of the results we reconsider the assumption that the pentaploid hybrid H.m.×H.l. is purely clonal. New hypotheses concerning the origin of the pentaploid hybrid and its reproduction are proposed, and the consequences for genetic diversity in natural populations discussed.  相似文献
